Freedom House’s transitional living program for women, also called “The Family Afterward,” comprise a unique and innovative new model that has realized unprecedented success since its implementation. The difference lies in the level of services provided in relation to typical halfway houses in New Jersey, and indeed, across the entire country.

In our transitional living programs for women, because the women residents come to us from having completed other long-term residential treatment programs, there is essentially no rehabilitation treatment offered. Instead, when a woman enters our facility she is assigned a case manager who will oversee every facet of her integration back into society. This includes working with the courts toward family reunification and placing a predominant emphasis on life skills training that the resident will need in order to live a productive life and properly raise her children, such as home management, budgeting, parenting, problem solving and nutritious cooking instruction.

To gain admittance into The Family Afterward program, a candidate for admission will have had a primary diagnosis of alcoholism and/or drug abuse and have previously been through a structured long term residential treatment center. Applicants must also be willing to commit to a lengthy recovery and reunification process, be ready to obtain gainful employment, and willing to submit to the four (4) main objectives of the program:

  • To provide drug and alcohol free SAFE housing
  • Reunification with family and/or children
  • Economic independence
  • Maintenance of a sustained and enlarged recovery process

Currently, The Family Afterward operates two transitional living facilities for women and their children, one in Trenton, New Jersey, and the other in Washington Township, New Jersey. Plans are underway for another house also to be located in Warren County, New Jersey. Our greatest achievement to date has been our ability to successfully address the number one problem for mothers who have completed long term drug rehab or alcoholism treatment, which is the loss of their children. In fact, over the past five years, The Family Afterward has reunited over 100 children with their mothers and instilled the Faith, Hope, and Trust needed to face each day with renewed determination.

Freedom House depends on special events to raise funds for long term residental treatment programs and drug, alcohol rehab programs.

The program has additionally achieved National Accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
